World leaders have strongly condemned the grenade and gun terrorist attacks in India's financial capital Mumbai, which left at least a hundred people dead.

President-elect Barack Obama led global condemnation vowing that the US will work "with India and nations around the world to root out and destroy terrorist networks."

Britain's Prime Minister Gordon Brown described the attacks as outrageous and said there will be a "vigorous response." At the same time the European Union said it "shares in the mourning of the Indian nation and stands by its side during this dramatic test."

A statement issued by the office of the UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon read "no cause or grievance can justify indiscriminate attacks against civilians" and called "for the perpetrators to be brought to justice swiftly."

The unknown group "The Deccan Mujahideen" has claimed responsibility for the Mumbai attacks in an email it sent to news agencies, Indian TV channels reported early Thursday.

The violence in Mumbai came two months after a suicide bombing on the Marriot Hotel in Pakistan's capital, Islamabad, killed 40 people and a January attack on the luxury Serena Hotel in the Afghan capital Kabul killed eight.
