Intel Launches Core i7, Claims Fastest Processor on Planet: Intel Launches Core i7, Claims Fastest Processor on Planet Intel has officially unveiled its Core i7 CPU, formerly codenamed Nehalem.

Intel has officially unveiled its Core i7 CPU, formerly codenamed Nehalem, which it claims is the fastest processor on the planet.

"This is the fastest processor on the planet. We are passing a threshold for killer new apps," Pat Gelsinger, senior vice president of Intel's Digital Entertainment group said during a ceremony in San Francisco, where the processor was presented.

The Core i7 is one of Intel's first processors to put four cores on one piece of silicon, referred to as a monolithic die. Previous Intel quad-core chips cobbled together two dual-core die.

Each Core i7 processor features an 8 MB level 3 cache and three channels of DDR3 1066 memory. The quad-core processor has 731 million transistors.

The i7 also packs a technology called Turbo Boost that accelerates performance to match a computer user's needs and workloads.

Power management has been built in so that for single or double threaded software two cores will shut down while the others overclock, or turbo boost themselves, without increasing power consumption.

Dell and Gateway have already announced systems using the new chip.
