McCain's Appearance in Letterman Show Boosts Ratings

A research revealed the appearance of the US Republican presidential nominee John McCain in the show hosted by David Letterman Thursday night attracted the attention of 6.5 million viewers, People Magazine reported.

It was Letterman's biggest night since a December 2005 participation of Oprah Winfrey, when she laid to rest long-standing rumors of a feud between them, and a boost of 73 percent over the show's average audience this season.

McCain's appearance was a make-up for September 24, when he called Letterman an hour and a half before showtime and said he had to rush back to Washington to deal with the economic crisis.

Letterman, who's been laying into McCain every night since then, started in immediately last night when the candidate walked onstage at the Ed Sullivan Theater.

"Can you stay?" he asked, dripping cynicism.

"Depends on how bad it gets," McCain answered.

During Thursday night's show, Letterman ridiculed the presidential candidate and showed him sitting for an interview in New York with Katie Couric instead of boarding a plane.

"I screwed up. What can I say?" McCain said.
