Georgia was going to become a NATO member, according to statements made by German Chancellor Angela Merkel during her visit in Tbilisi Sunday.
Merkel arrived to Georgia to have talks with Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, regarding the conflict between Russia and Georgia in the separatist republic of South Ossetia, which is supported by Russia.
During her meeting Friday in Sochi with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, Merkel firmly stood behind the territorial entity of Georgia. At he meeting the Chancellor defined the Russian reaction as "disproportionate."
In the meantime, world information agencies have reported Sunday that the Russian President had a phone conversation with the French Sarkozi. During the conversation Medvedev had promised that Russia would begin withdrawing their military contingent from Georgia on Monday.
Medveev had further pointed out that it was necessary that the Georgian side strictly and unconditionally fulfill their commitments and return all of their military units back to the military barracks.
