Military battles continue Sunday on both fronts in Georgia - South Ossetia and Abkhazia Map by colorado.edu
The President of the self-proclaimed independent Republic of Abkhazia Sergey Bagapsh declared Sunday that he was sending a new troop of 1,000 soldiers from the Abkhazian special task forces to the Kodor Valley, as announced by leading world information agencies.

The Abkhazian forces are assigned with pushing the Georgian army out of the Valley, which is the only Abkhazian territory controlled by the Georgians.

Abkhazia attempted to secede from Georgia at the same time South Ossetia did in 1990-92, however, it has not received any international recognition.

Earlier Sunday, the Russian aviation had bombarded a military airport near the Georgian capital Tbilisi, as announced by the Secretary of the Georgian Security Council Aleksandr Lomaya.

Latest information about the withdrawal of the Georgian forces from South Ossetia has proven controversial. Some official Georgian sources have stated for world media outlets that all armed forces would be withdrawn while others have explained that the troops have only left the capital of South Ossetia Tskhinvali, but were relocating to other areas in South Ossetia.

In the light of the controversial information about the Georgian armed forces' withdrawal, the Georgian government announced that during the last several hours 10,000 additional Russian troops have entered Georgian territory.

A Russian military source, cited by the Russian Information Agency "Novosti" has declared that Russian military ships have entered Georgian territorial waters.

Another source has confirmed that Russia was starting a sea siege of Georgia to prevent military deliveries for the country by the way of the sea.

In the same time the Russian ITAR-TASS Agency has announced that the armed battle for Tskhinvali has been resumed. Eyewitnesses report hearing loud rumble from military airplanes and artillery fire in the area.

Military Battles Continue on Both Fronts in Georgia
WASHINGTON — The image of President Bush smiling and chatting with Prime Minister Vladimir V. Putin of Russia from the stands of the Beijing Olympics even as Russian aircraft were shelling Georgia outlines the reality of America’s Russia policy. While America considers Georgia its strongest ally in the bloc of former Soviet countries, Washington needs Russia too much on big issues like Iran to risk it all to defend Georgia. And State Department officials made it clear on Saturday that there was no chance the United States would intervene militarily....

The Bush administration’s strong support for Georgia — including the training of Georgia’s military and arms support — came, in part, as a reward for its support of the United States in Iraq. The United States has held Georgia up as a beacon of democracy in the former Soviet Union; it was supposed to be an example to other former Soviet republics of the benefits of tilting to the West.

But that, along with America and Europe’s actions on Kosovo, left Russia feeling threatened, encircled and more convinced that it had to take aggressive measures to restore its power, dignity and influence in a region it considers its strategic back yard, foreign policy experts said.

Russia’s emerging aggressiveness is now also timed with America’s preoccupation with Iraq and Afghanistan, and the looming confrontation with Iran. These counterbalancing considerations mean that Moscow is in the driver’s seat, administration officials acknowledged.

“We’ve placed ourselves in a position that globally we don’t have the wherewithal to do anything,” Mr. Friedman of Stratfor said. “One would think under those circumstances, we’d shut up.”

One senior administration official, when told of that quote, laughed. “Well, maybe we’re learning to shut up now,” he said. He asked that his name not be used because he was not authorized to speak publicly on the issue.

Anastasia:

I fail to see how two heads of state chatting at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games could be blown into an international incident. Many attend these ceremonies.

What the journalists wrote can even be true, but that's irrelevant at the Olympics.

With all its faults--and it loses more dignity every year--the Olympic Games are still the best event of international cooperation currently in existence.

What is the most important conclusion from the Sofia Mayor elections on November 15, 2009?
That the ruling party GERB of PM Borisov continues to be hugely popular, whereas the Socialists are pretty much out.

That the decline of the Socialist Party has stopped whereas the ruling party GERB has failed to attract the expected very high number of voters.

That the Sofia residents are either completely disillusioned with politics, or care little about who is Mayor.

That the record-high jackpot of the Bulgarian State Lottery "Toto" generated much greater interest than the Mayor elections.
