Two men armed with knives and explosives ambushed a military police unit in China's majority Muslim northwest, killing 16 officers and wounding 16 others before being arrested, state media said.

The local police said that one of the attackers drove a truck to hit a team of more than 70 policemen who were jogging in a regular morning exercise. Meanwhile, the other suspect threw an explosive toward the gate of the police station in the city of Kashi.

Police found 10 home-made explosives, a home-made hand gun and four knives in the vehicle.

The assault, which is the deadliest terrorist attack in China since the early 1990s, took place just four days before the start of the Olympics, adding to security concerns in the capital.

"We are prepared to deal with any kind of security threat and we are confident we will have a safe and peaceful Olympic Games," said Sun Weide, a spokesman for the Beijing Organizing Committee.
