Former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic faces a UN war crimes judge for the first time on Thursday to answer genocide charges.

Judge Alphons Orie will officially inform Karadzic of the 11 counts of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity on the indictment.

Karadzic will also be given an opportunity to plead but he may choose to delay his plea by up to 30 days, by the end of which an automatic not-guilty plea would be entered on his behalf.

Among the counts on the indictment are Karadzic's alleged role in the 44-month siege of Sarajevo and the 1995 Srebrenica massacre of some 8,000 Muslim men and boys. If found guilty he faces life imprisonment.

It was reported that since his dramatic arrest in Belgrade that ended 11 years on the run, Karadzic has been shorn of the beard and the long hair that helped disguise him as an alternative healer.
