Serbia says war crimes suspect Radovan Karadzic avoided capture for some 13 years by living under a false identity in Belgrade and practicing alternative medicine.

Karadzic, who was one of the most wanted men in the world, lived in the Serbian capital under the alias of Dragan David Dabic and worked at a private surgery, Rasim Ljajic, president of the National Council for Cooperation with the Hague Tribunal said, as cited by the B92 news agency.

The former leader of Bosnian Serbs also practiced alternative medicine and used to hide his face behind a white long beard. Serbian officials say his false identity was so convincing that Karadzic moved freely in public without being recognized.

Karadzic, was arrested at a police raid in Belgrade on Monday, 13 years after he was first indicted by the United Nations War Crimes Tribunal for genocide.

The former president of the Republic of Srpska is accused of authorizing the shooting of civilians during the 43-month siege of Sarajevo and orchestrating the slaughter of some 8,000 Muslim men in the Eastern Bosnian town of Srebernica during the 1992-95 Bosnia war.
