Four Bombs Rock Northern Spain

Four bombs exploded in northern Spain on Sunday causing damages but no injuries, as a caller had warned the authorities, saying he was speaking on behalf of the Basque separatists.

However, the first bomb detonated without warning around 5 a.m. outside a bank in the northern town of Getxo.

Two bombs went off at about 12:15 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. in the coastal city of Laredo, and another one at 1:00 p.m. in the nearby beach resort town of Noja, but authorities were already warned.

Laredo and Noja are popular summertime destinations while Getxo, near the Basque port of Bilbao, is home to many business leaders.

Authorities said ETA's attack is meant to hurt Spain's key tourism industry.

The armed Basque group ETA has been fighting for decades for an independent Basque homeland in northern Spain and western France and more than 800 people have died in Basque violence.
