Tension Between South Korea and Japan Escalates Over Takeshima Dispute

World | July 14, 2008, Monday // 00:00

South Korea is going to recall its Ambassador in Japan after Japan's confirmation of their sovereignty over the Takeshima Islands, as announced by dariknews.bg citing BGNES

According to a statement made by a spokesperson of the South Korean Foreign Ministry, the Ambassador's recall is a protest act. The spokesperson had not specified actual timeframes for the recall.

Media publications confirm that Tokyo had notified Seoul that they plan to include Japan's sovereignty over the islands in school textbooks.

The islands are located in the Sea of Japan between the two countries. Japan officially incorporated the islands as part of its territory in 1905, shortly before Korea became Japan's protectorate, but they have been controlled by South Korea since World War II.

They are also known as Takeshima to the Japanese and as Dokdo to the Koreans.
