At least 40 people were killed and more than 140 injured Monday in a powerful suicide blast near the Indian Embassy in Afghanistan's capital Kabul.

The explosion took place around 8:30 am local time, ripping through a crowd of people waiting in line for visas at the Indian Embassy, the Washington Post reported.

Correspondents in Afghanistan said it has been the deadliest attack in Kabul for many months.

At least two of the dead were Indian paramilitary soldiers guarding the embassy, Indian foreign ministry officials said.

According to authorities, the suicide bomber somehow managed to drive his four-wheel drive vehicle packed with explosives towards the gate of the embassy where he detonated his bomb.

"The government of India strongly condemns this cowardly terrorist attack on its diplomatic mission in Afghanistan. Such acts of terror will not deter us from fulfilling our commitments to the government and people of Afghanistan," a statement from the Indian Foreign Ministry said.
