Fidel Castro has slammed the EU decision for lifting diplomatic sanctions against Cuba calling it an "enormous hypocrisy."
Former Cuban President Fidel Castro has slammed the EU decision for lifting diplomatic sanctions against Cuba but imposing tough human rights conditions, calling it an "enormous hypocrisy".
In an essay published on Cuba's official website, the revolutionary declared the EU has no right to lecture Cuba on human rights given the "brutal" immigration policy the bloc passed just days ago.
Castro also wrote that neither the sanctions nor their end would have "absolutely any economic consequence" for Cuba, which also suffers decades-old US trade embargo.
While saying that Cuba must improve its human rights record and free political prisoners, the EU mistreats illegal immigrants from Latin America by using the new law to jail and expel them, Mr Castro says.
"From Cuba, in the name of human rights, they demand impunity for those that try to deliver... the homeland and the people to imperialism," he adds, referring to the US.
The decision for lifting the sanctions against Cuba is to come into formal effect on Monday. According to the EU, the move was aimed at encouraging change in Cuba, following Fidel Castro's replacement by his brother Raul in February.
