EU Discuss Irish No Vote

European Union foreign ministers are gathering in Luxembourg to discuss how to respond to the Irish rejection of the Lisbon reform treaty.

Voters in the Irish Republic, the only state that held a referendum on Lisbon, have rejected the treaty by 53.4% to 46.6%, BBC reported. The document cannot be implemented unless approved by all 27 EU states.

At the meeting Irish FM Micheal Martin is expected to hint at solutions of the crisis while a two-day EU summit in Brussels starting on Thursday is expected to chart the way ahead.

President of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso, had urged all EU states to back the treaty, which was due to come into force on 1 January 2009, saying the reforms would streamline the workings of the bloc and strengthen it to meet global challenges.
