Assenov: Bulgaria Customs Agency Consistently Fights Corruption

Crime | May 31, 2008, Saturday // 00:00

Corruption fight and the elimination of contraband channels were the main tasks of Bulgaria's Customs Agency in the last few years, former Director Assen Assenov said.

Each year an average of 100 to 150 legal actions are taken against customs employees suspected to be involved in corruption, while 20-30 of them are being fired for taking bribes.

Assenov pointed out that each year the excise revenue increases, which, according to him, was a sign that the Agency is was doing good work.

Regarding information about the initiation of check-ups of his activity, Assenov stated that he has learned about them from the media and that, at the moment, he was not at all personally engaged with such process. Assenov qualified the issue connected to the alias "Fat Man", which he allegedly had as a Secret Services' agent as speculation and an attempt to destabilize him as a person

Assen Assenov, along with his three Deputes submitted their resignations Wednesday. The reasons cited were fatigue and stress. Finance Minister Plamen Oresharski accepted the resignation and a new Customs' Director has already been appointed.
