Bulgaria police arrested Tuesday the head of Forensic Medicine Centre of Alexandrovska hospital in Sofia, doctor Stanislav Hristov, over illegal explantations and trade in human organs.
The court decided to leave Hristov under home detention and the pathologist has already been dismissed from his position.
According to the prosecution, Hristov carried out about 98 illegal explantations of bones, tendons, and other tissues, which were sold mainly in the US. Investigators are checking other 500 cases of trade in human organs, in which Hristov may have also been involved.
Obligatory medical examinations were skipped in many of the explantations, authorities commented, adding that there are also a lot of missing documents related to the autopsies.
Hristov commented that there is a deliberate campaign against him, provoked by a colleague of his, who used to work in the pathology department of the hospital.
