An unemployed Bulgarian man drained nearly BGN 1 M of state money from the funds granted for restoring the damages from the floods in 2005 in the Novi Pazar municipality.
The man is Georgi Mitev, 41, from the coastal village of Slanchevo. He managed to drain around BGN 900 000, from the granted BGN 2 M from the state to the municipality.
Mitev used a scheme in which he forced the mayor of the municipality to hire the firms for the repair works that Mitev chooses. Meanwhile it turned out all firms that were hired were owned by Mitev himself and many of the needed repairs of the transport infrastructure were not executed at all.
The "unemployed" was arrested for money draining of state funds and the signing of 150 fake documents, but later on was released on B GN 20 000 bail.
