Barcelona Exit Blows Champions League Race Wide Open

Holders Barcelona failed to progress to the quarterfinal stage despite stealing a 1-0 away win against resolute Liverpool on Tuesday.

Bookmakers hailed Barcelona as favourites to retain the title, even after losing to Liverpool 2-1 at home a fortnight ago and their exit blows the competition wide open.

Despite dominating the first half and rattling the crossbar twice, Liverpool failed to capitalize its advantage, allowing Barcelona back into the game in the second half.

World Footballer of the Year Ronaldinho hit the bar before Eidur Gudjohnsen's goal set up a cagey final 15 minutes for the home crowd, but in the end Liverpool's resolute defending paid off and the club advance to the last eight stage of the competition on aggregate.

Emotions ran high at the Mestalla stadium, where Valencia hosted Italian league leaders Internazionale. The scoreless draw put the Spanish club through on the away goals rule, the first match in Milan ending in a 2-2 stalemate.

But the match will be remembered more for the mass brawl that broke out between players and staff of the two clubs after the final whistle, spilling out into the tunnel leading to the dressing rooms.

Jose Mourinho's Chelsea made hard work of their task against the manager's former club Porto, going one goal down early in the game, but recovered in the second half to book their passage with a 2-1 win.

In the last game of the evening, Roma dashed Lyon's dreams of making it three consecutive quarterfinals, winning the away leg of the tie 2-0. The first leg in Rome ended without goals on either side.
