Bulgaria: ??EU and the Great Expectations of Bulgaria's Independent Journalists

The few independent Bulgarian journalists are justified in being disappointed with the long-awaited meeting in Sofia with EU Digital Agenda Commissioner Neelie Kroes.

These journalists – who aren't many more than those who sent her a letter recently – had hoped to hear Kroes condemn the political and economic subordination in Bulgarian media.

Unfortunately, discredited publishers usurped the meeting, while the journalists were pushed out.

Kroes refused to dwell on scandalous dependencies in the brothel that is Bulgarian media, declaring instead she had no sufficient legal leverage, not realizing the journalists are aware of that and the fact they appealed to her anyway speaks enough for the desperate situation of Bulgaria's media environment.

The EU Commissioner only made the relativist recognition there was "no one opinion" in Bulgaria on independent media, and promised "some pressure" by organizing a roundtable and writing a report, which, however, won't focus on Bulgaria only.

In fact, an EU Commissioner has a lot of leverage! Like what Kroes should have done – condemning some of the culprits for the manipulations and abuses in Bulgarian media on the spot!

That would've cost her nothing because, unlike their employees, she has no reason to fear them!
