A Bulgarian and an Albanian have been detained in Italy for felling and stealing century-old eucalyptus trees.

Dimitar Dimitrov, 31, and Malibor Hlubcai, 23, were arrested at the crime scene in the region of Calabria, southern Italy.

The two had been cutting down eucalyptus trees in a private forest with a chainsaw, when local police noticed the logs.

The owner of the forest was reported to be a senior citizen from Milan.

The Albanian national has a criminal record.

The offenders will be subjected to fast-track litigation.
