Derna: Maddened by Grief and Anger, Libyans Burned Down the Mayor's home
Hundreds of protesters are demanding answers to the causes of the catastrophic flooding that has killed thousands of people and left tens of thousands homeless
Libya's eastern city of Benghazi, which set the start of the revolt against leader Muammar Gaddafi, was celebrating on Wednesday, while anti-government troops were taking control of the city.
The Guardian reported about troops pouring into the courtyard of a ransacked police station carrying tonnes of weaponry and ammunition, in order to prevent it from being seized by forces who support Gaddafi.
All around Benghazi there were indications that Gaddafi has lost control of the city. The checkpoints, previously operated by military, were now manned only by a handful of traffic people.
Every physical sign of the dictator has been taken down or burned. The former Libyan flag, dating from the reign of the monarch ousted by Gaddafi, was flying above ransacked government buildings.
Triumphant protesters and supporters flooded the city center, waving the former red, green and black flag and giving out snacks and juice to passing cars, which honked their cars. People were dancing, cheering and playing loud music.
"Ben Ali, Hosni, Muammar," read graffiti on a city billboard, placing Gaddafi's name alongside the names of the ousted leaders of Tunisia and Egypt.
It was announced earlier on Wednesday that two pilots have crushed their aircraft in order to avoid following the order and bomb the city of Benghazi.
