Brazil's authorities are launching an investigation into death threats against the newly-inaugurated President of the country Dilma Rousseff, which have appeared on Twitter.

The investigation has been announced by Brazil's Chief Prosecutor Roberto Gurgel, as cited by the Spanish news agency EFE.

"We are going to analyze these messages in order to see if the current legislation provides for charging their authors," Gurgel said.

The death threats against Brazil's new President, Bulgaria-descended Dilma Rousseff, appeared on Twitter on Saturday, January 1, 2011, during the ceremony for Dilma's inauguration.

According to the Brazil's prosecutor's office, the death threats stated "Please somebody finally kill this Dilma" and "A sniper must shoot in the head her and vice-president" Michel Temer.

Florisvaldo Fier, a Brazilian Congressman from the ruling Workers Party, said, as cited by the Washington Post, that the threats against Dilma on Twitter during her inauguration must be investigated and not taken lightly.

Meanwhile, in a statement on Monday, officials said attacked the Brazilian government's website off the air a day after President Dilma Rousseff was sworn in.

The hackers caused the website to become unstable but it was never off the air. The statement says that hackers overloaded the number of accesses to the site to try to disrupt it.

Monday's statement says that the attack "did not put the presidency's site in danger" and no confidential information was accessed or destroyed.
