Frank Ruggiero has succeeded the late Richard Holbrooke as the acting US' special representative to Afghanistan and Pakistan, the American State Department has announced.

Ruggiero is a career civil servant and has served in several positions in the Departments of State and Commerce. He has an M.A. in Middle Eastern Affairs Ruggiero became Holbrooke's deputy in July 2010 after serving as the senior US civilian representative for southern Afghanistan

Richard C. Holbrooke, the diplomat who spearheaded the end of the Bosnian war and most recently served as the Obama administration's point man in the volatile Afghan-Pakistani war zone, pushing Kabul and Islamabad to work together against al Qaeda and Taliban militants, died on Tuesday, aged 69.
