A giant replica of the shoe tossed by a journalist at President Bush during his December trip to Iraq has been unveiled in a ceremony in the northern Iraqi city of Tikrit, CNN reports.

The sculpture is located at the premises of the Tikrit Orphanage complex. Sculptor Laith al-Amiri was assisted by children at the home in the creation of the monument. The USD 5,000 shoe replica is made of fiberglass and coated with copper.

In December, journalist Muntadhir al-Zaidi hurled his shoes at Bush and Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki during a press conference in Baghdad. Al-Zaidi, regarded by many people throughout the Arab and Muslim world as a hero, is in jail, awaiting a trial for his actions.

By tradition, throwing a shoe is the most insulting act in the Arab world.

Saddam Hussein, the former Iraqi leader overthrown by the US in 2003, was from the Tikrit region.
