Bulgaria’s Chief Prosecutor Boris Velchev has reiterated the criticism of the country’s judicial system express in the latest interim EC monitoring report on Bulgaria.
“As always, the EC Report is objective. It is critical enough, and the criticism it contains is familiar. It does recognize an improvement with respect to the work of the Prosecutor’s Office and the work on EU funds absorption,” Boris Velchev stated Wednesday as he was heading for the weekly meeting of the Supreme Judicial Council.
The Chief Prosecutor further stressed the positive assessment of the joint work of Bulgaria’s Prosecutor’s Office with the Interior Ministry and the National Security Agency DANS.
He admitted, however, that the big criticism of the Bulgarian prosecutors in the EC report had to do with their failure to disentangle the case of trade in influence in which a businessman called Krasimir Georgiev, aka Krasio the Black, allegedly brokered magistrates’ appointments for the price of EUR 200 000 each.
Velchev said the Prosecutor’s Office had not given up on this case even though it was an extremely difficult one to tackle.
“Bulgaria’s judicial system is a subscriber of EU criticism. Until it does not see serious change, the criticism of the EC will be one and the same,” he stated emphasizing the importance of the dialogue between the judicial and the legislative branch for the reform of the former.
Velchev went as far as demanding Constitutional amendments in order to rectify certain issues in the judiciary.
