Bulgaria rightist Blue Coalition MP, Vanyo Sharkov, has reported that food products containing GMOs have been sold for years in Bulgaria.
Sharkov cited research carried out by the Ministry of Health on GMOs from 2004-2009, which has not yet been released to the public. The results of the research allegedly show that GMOs have been detected in some brands of Soya and maize products, meatballs, sausages, snacks and cornflakes.
The Blue Coalition called on the Parliamentary Health Commission to publish the full results of the research immediately on the Health Ministry web-site. They also called for all bay food products that contain GMOs to be banned from the Bulgarian market.
Sharkov concluded by saying that; “The Ministry of Health for years has not met its obligations under the Food Act. In the Food Act it expressly states that the Ministry of Health must maintain a list of all approved commercial food products on the Bulgarian market which include GMOs on their website.”
