The Sofia City Court has appointed a new judge for the high-profile trial of Bulgaria's ex-Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov.

The new panel of judges, chosen by the system for random distribution of cases, will be headed by Toni Getov, revealed the Prosecution.

On Thursday, the presiding judge Dimitrina Angelova withdrew from the case after the Prosecution sought her recusal on suspicion of bias. A number of tabloids had written of alleged close ties between Angelova and Tsvetanov's lawyer Menko Menkov.

The ex-Minister is charged with refusing to endorse 6 prosecutor's requests to grant a permit for the use of special surveillance devices during an investigation against the former head of Veliko Turnovo's regional anti-mafia unit.
