Bulgaria Parliament Speaker, Tsetska Tsacheva, has stated that no GMOs will be released into the environment in Bulgaria until clear evidence of the impact on nature and man is provided.
Tsacheva was speaking Monday after meeting with experts from the Academy of Science, Agricultural University, University of Food Technology and Agricultural College.
"We are united that at this stage, without any evidence from the scientific community about the impact of these organisms on man and nature, it is unacceptable for them to be grown in the open environment, so the option of changing this part of the law on GMOs is removed" Tsacheva said.
Tsacheva added that the new text for the changes to the GMO Act is being fine-tuned by the Parliamentary Environment Commission before the second reading of the Act in parliament
It was also revealed that during the meeting data from the survey by the National Center for Public Opinion Research on GMOs, commissioned by Tsacheva, was published showing that 71% of Bulgarians believe that the risks associated with GMOs outweigh any possible benefits.
