The Bulgarian Members of the Parliament decided Wednesday to freeze their salaries until the end of 2013.
The lawmakers’ salaries will thus remain unchanged from 2009 until the end of the year.
They are currently receiving approximately BGN 2200 (EUR 1124) a month.
Parliament Chair Mihail Mikov described the move as a “sign of solidarity with the difficult life of Bulgarians.
The decision will also affect the salaries of several key officials, including the Prime Minister, the President and the Chief Prosecutor. Their salaries are determined by a formula based on the lawmakers’ salaries.
The salaries of the MPs are tied with the average monthly wage as reported quarterly by the country's National Statistics Institute, NSI. The update of salaries of MPs then leads to update of those of other senior politicians.
