EU Energy Commissioner Gunther Oettinger has opposed EU sanctions against Russia’s gas sector over the crisis in Ukraine.

Speaking Tuesday at an Energy Community meeting in Kiev, he insisted that sanctions against Russia’s gas sector were to be avoided, adding that reliable energy supplies were not supposed to become a political instrument.

Oettinger, as cited by ITAR-TASS, made clear that the EU expected to reach a compromise with Russia and to receive sufficient quantities of Russian gas at market prices.

The EU Energy Commissioner explained that they were analyzing opportunities for a transition to a pragmatic solution with the Russian partners.

He also called on Russia to not use gas as a weapon in its dispute with Ukraine.

Russia, Ukraine and the European Union are scheduled to hold a trilateral gas meeting in Berlin on September 26 in a bid to settle an ongoing dispute over gas deliveries.

The previous round of three-way gas talks, which ended on June 16, yielded no results.
