The US Senate has voted by 60 to 39 in favor of the Obama healthcare bill, in a session held at 7 am Washington time on Thursday.

The bill was regarded by President Obama as the most important of the current presidency. A major provision of the bill has been to extend the provision of health insurance to over 30 M uniinsured American citizens.

The positive vote is the outcome of months of debate by Democrats and Republicans alike.

The Obama family had delayed the start of their Hawaii Christmas vacation until the oucome of the Senate vote was known.
