A court in the Black Sea city of Burgas has freed on bail a man who forcefully detained three migrants near the Bulgarian border in April.

The decision cannot be appealed.

Until now, Petar Nizamov was in custody. He will have to pay BGN 3000 (roughly EUR 1500) to be released.

The Burgas District Court has ruled there is no likelihood that he tries to hide from justice due to the "permanent link" he has with the place he lieves and is unlikely to commit a crime while not in detention.

Nizamov made headlines in Bulgaria and around the world with the so-called "citizen's arrests", claiming he had the right to act because it constituted a crime to illegally cross state borders.

He was part of groups of vigilante migrant hunters who patrolled along the border in the spring, claiming to protect their homeland from migrants and to be helping police.

After being placed under house arrest, he appealed, and his request was turned down by a lower-instance court.

Nizamov, however, is still facing an investigation.

Daily 24 Chasa reports that a protest had been called by his supporters, but only several people arrived in front of the court on Wednesday.
