The houses on Gorna Studena street where most of the Asparuhovo flood victims died, are illegal, reports Sega daily.
According to Oleg Kolev, chief expert in the Landslides and Ground Reinforcement department of the Varna municipality, by law the houses had to be at least 25 meters away from the concrete bed of the gully. They were built right next to it, instead.
“Littering and illegal construction disrupted the normal water flow,” he said. “The water formed large pools and when the dams of dirt and garbage broke, it flooded the area. The main obstacle in the gully was an illegally built barber shop. When it went down under the pressure, the water tore down the surrounding houses where the majority of the 13 victims lived.”
Kolev's words are in stark contrast with the claims of the residents on the Gorna Studena street that their houses are completely legal.
Meanwhile, the local authorities ordered the evacuation of 120 structurally unstable houses in Asparuhovo. According to the residential registration, in them live 1000 people, reports Dnevnik.bg
