A new right-wing party will emerge in Bulgaria within months, according to Martin Dimitrov, a former leader of the Union of Democratic Forces.
“Bulgaria needs a new right-wing party,” Dimitrov told Nova TV on Tuesday.
His statement follows the unprecedented failure of several key right-wing outfits to enter the country Parliament after the May 12 elections.
Dimitrov revealed that members of the Union of Democratic Forces, the Democrats for Strong Bulgaria (DSB) and the Bulgaria for Citizens movement may join the new formation, among others.
The three aforementioned parties failed to overcome the 4% election threshold, prompting their leaders to resign on Monday.
In his interview on Tuesday, Dimitrov praised DSB leader Ivan Kostov’s decision to resign in the aftermath of the vote, noting that it was high time he gave way to youngsters.
Dimitrov further stated that a unified right-wing party would have won at least 10% in Sunday’s elections.
In terms of party representation, the composition of Bulgaria's new parliament is set to closely resemble the last one: former rulers GERB, followed by the Bulgarian Socialist Party, the liberal Movement for Rights and Freedom, and nationalist Ataka.
In all, close to a quarter, or 24.35% of Bulgarian's valid votes, went for parties who did not pass the 4% election threshold.
