Mohammed El Senussi, the 49-year-old Libyan crown prince in exile, is ready to return to his home country and has hinted he may fill the void left by Muammar Gaddafi's dying regime.
"The people have to decide," El Senussi has told the German Die Zeit, adding that he wants Libya to be a "democratic country". He had hinted of a possible return to Libya already in April
"I am incredibly happy and proud of my nation, seeing the flag of freedom waving over Tripoli," he has said.
According to El Senussi, there is no risk of Libya becoming an uncontrollable country. "Libya is not Afghanistan, Iraq or Yemen," he has stated.
Mohammed El Senussi is the son of Crown Prince Hasan as-Senussi of Libya, and of Crown Princess Fawzia bint Tahir Bakeer. Born in Tripoli, he is considered by Libyan royalists to be the legitimate heir to the Senussi Crown of Libya.
El Senussi was six years old when his great-uncle, King Idris, was overthrown in Gaddafi's 1969 coup. Idris had ruled Libya from 1951 following its liberation from Italian and British rule.
