As Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov recently set an example by telling his escort drivers to start stopping at crosswalks never mind how busy he was, the drivers have been spotted actually letting pedestrians cross.
On Tuesday, Borisov's escort was seen letting all waiting pedestrians cross the Dondukov boulevard in downtown Sofia, News.bg reports, citing an eye-witness.
The drivers of the National Security Service, which guards Bulgaria's high officials, are notorious for causing traffic incidents and often abusing their privileges, which only allow them to break the speed limits and ignore traffic lights only in emergency situations and only when the necessary visual and sound signalizations are on.
The number of car accidents involving escorting vehicles of high Bulgarian officials was at least 31 in 2010.
In September 2010, the escort of President Georgi Parvanov caused an incident near Lovech. . In August 2009, Borisov's escort caused a crash near Varna; just two months earlier, Borisov's predecessor Sergey Stanishev's escort was also in a road accident near Blagoevgrad.
