The striker's contract runs out next summer and the Spaniards hope to land him in a cut-price GBP12 M deal, The Sun reports. Mexico's Javier Hernandez is seen by Sir Alex Ferguson as the better option alongside Wayne Rooney.

However, any deal depends if United will take such a cut after paying Tottenham GBP 30.75 M for him in 2008.

Berbatov is currently the Premiership's top scorer with 22 goals, but Hernandez's brilliant displays have forced him to stay on reserve and has not played many games.
