Rightists Call on Bulgaria President to Veto GMO Law Changes

The rightist Union of Democratic Forces (UDF) party has called on Bulgaria President Georgi Parvanov to veto the proposed changes to the Law on Genetically Modified Crops if they are voted in.
In mid-January the Members of the Parliament approved the amendments proposed by the center-right GERB government on the first reading, easing the GMO laws to get in line with EU legislation.
UDF MPs Lachezar Toshev and Mihail Mihailov called for changes in the proposed GMO Act, including the banning of GM crop field trials for vines, wheat, oilseed rape and tobacco. They also proposed that fines for GMO pollution of the environment should be kept at BGN 100 000 for individuals and BGN 1 M for companies.
The rightists noted Bulgaria PM Boyko Borisov’s anti-GMO comments but also stated that they were mystified by the fact that Bulgarian Agriculture Minister, Miroslav Naydenov voted for the introduction of GM animal feed into the EU in a EU council meeting.
Earlier Tuesday, Environment minister, Nona Karadzhova, tried to dampen fears that the GMO Act will endanger human health and the environment.
