Crime in Bulgaria has increased by 16% in the first 100 days under the new center-right GERB government, compared to the same period last year.

The Interior Ministry presented Thursday a report on its first 100 days in office. They stated that 40 murders have occurred in the period with 34 of them being solved, they also reported a rise in violent crime of 5% y/y.

Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov said that there has been an increase in the success of crime detection which might have lead to such an increase in the crime figures. He added that the main target has been drug dealers, with 28 arrested in Sofia alone; however he admitted kidnapping remains a major unsolved problem.

Meanwhile, the report stated that the Ministry budget deficit is BGN 19 M meaning that police wages will not be raised in the near future.

It was also announced that Kiril Dimov is the new head of the Special Unit for Combating Terrorism – in the Security Police department. The reason for the change is that the Interior Ministry was not happy with the work done by the unit.
