A symbolic replica of the Berlin Wall was constructed and torn down in the Bulgarian capital Sofia on Monday, 20 years after the destruction of the actual wall.
100 people participated in the tearing down of the installation entitled “Wall 20” on the Knyaz Alexander I Square in downtown Sofia in order to celebrate the anniversary of the event marking the end of communism in Eastern Europe.
“Wall 20” was more of a work of art since it had graffiti artists painting on one of its sides, and regular people and kids writing messages dedicated to Europe’s unity on the other.
The installation was a project of the Bulgarian artist Nikola Toromanov – Ficho. Parts of the decorated Berlin Wall replica will be placed on display close to the St. Nedelya Cathedral.
With the tearing down of Wall 20, Sofia has become one of the many European cities with similar initiatives to mark the 20th year since the historic events of 1989.
