Several Gulf states have reported missile and drone strikes on their territories just hours after the United States and Iran announced a two-week ceasefire agreement, raising fresh questions about whether the truce is holding on the ground.
In the United Arab Emirates, authorities said air defense systems were actively intercepting incoming missiles and drones. The defense Ministry stated that explosions heard across different parts of the country were linked to interceptions of ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles. “The air defenses are currently dealing with missiles and drones coming from Iran,” the ministry said.
Kuwait also reported a major wave of drone activity, saying its air defense systems had intercepted unmanned aircraft launched since early morning hours. According to the Kuwaiti army, some of the drones targeted critical infrastructure, including oil facilities, power stations and water desalination plants, with officials warning of significant damage to parts of the country’s energy network. The Defense Ministry said forces responded to what it described as “intense hostile Iranian attacks,” confirming that 28 drones were neutralized.
Bahrain’s Interior Ministry said two civilians were injured and several homes were damaged in the Sitra area after debris from an intercepted drone fell in a residential zone. Officials said the incident occurred as air defense systems engaged what they described as an Iranian drone, adding that emergency teams later brought a fire under control at a facility that had been targeted, without providing further details. Loud explosions were reported in the capital Manama, with smoke seen rising from Sitra Island, which hosts key energy installations.
Iran has not issued an immediate response to the accusations. However, Iranian state media reported that an oil refinery on Lavan Island was struck on the same day, with firefighters deployed to contain the blaze and no casualties reported.
The incidents come shortly after Washington and Tehran agreed to the ceasefire, reached only about an hour before a deadline set by US President Donald Trump was due to expire. The agreement follows weeks of heightened regional tensions, during which Gulf states have repeatedly faced drone and missile attacks linked to the wider confrontation involving Iran, the United States and Israel, including earlier strikes on energy infrastructure and disruptions near the Strait of Hormuz.
