Volcano Eruption Triggers Urgent Evacuations of Thousands in Indonesia
Indonesia is grappling with a mounting crisis as rescue teams mobilize to evacuate thousands of people following a series of volcanic eruptions that have rattled the region
At least 58 people have been killed and dozens are being treated for burns and respiratory problems after Indonesia's most dangerous volcano Mount Merapi erupted again late Thursday, the BBC reports.
Reportedly more than 100 people have been killed and 75,000 more have been evacuated since the first eruption of the volcano last week.
On Thursday night, a gas cloud hit villages with even greater force than the previous explosions.
Rescue workers have said that villagers in the area were in flames and bodies burnt without recognition.
Scientists are warning of further eruptions in the coming weeks.
A rescue official told the BBC that some of the casualties could have been avoided if residents had stayed away from the danger zone.
Even though they were evacuated, many people have returned to the dangerous zone to check on their crops and livestock.
Merapi is one of the most active and dangerous volcanoes in Indonesia and has produced more lava flows than any other volcano in the world. It has been active for 10,000 years and has registered eruptions on average every four years.
