Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev said on Thursday that the perpetrators and organisers of the 2012 terrorist attack targeting a bus with Israeli tourists at the airport in Burgas will be brought to court in the coming days.
Plevneliev stated this during a press conference with his Israeli counterpart Reuven Rivlin, who is on a visit to Bulgaria.
The Bulgarian president explained that he had the assurance of Chief Prosecutor Sotir Tsatsarov that it was a matter of days to bring the perpetrators to court.
Three weeks ago, Tsatsarov said that the court proceedings against the perpetrators will be launched before July 15.
Plevneliev was firm that the attack did not manage to accomplish the goals of its perpetrators as it has neither scared the two countries nor led to drop in the number of Israeli tourists visiting Bulgaria. On the contrary, it has united Bulgaria and Israel to search for the perpetrators.
On 18 July 2012, a suicide bomber targeted a passenger bus with Israeli tourists who had just landed at the airport in Burgas and were about to be taken to their hotel in the resort of Sunny Beach.
The bombing claimed the lives of five Israeli tourists and the Bulgarian driver of the bus and left more than thirty other people injured.
While no organisation has yet claimed responsibility for the bombing, Bulgaria and the international community maintain that a military wing of Hezbollah was behind it.
The investigation has been extended several times and no charges have been brought against anyone yet.
The authorities have identified two suspects with Canadian and Australian passports, who had been noticed in Ruse, Varna, Nesebar, Sunny Beach and Ravda in the weeks before the attack.
