Bulgarians working abroad sent USD 1.72 B to relatives in their home country in 2014, according to a World Bank report on remittances.
The report of the World Bank, as cited by Pressa daily, shows that Bulgaria’s remittance rates have been increasing over the past five years, from USD 1.33 B in 2010 to USD 1.67 B in 2013 to USD 1.72 B in 2014.
The number of Bulgarians living overseas is estimated at 1.5-2 million.
As regards the situation on the Balkans, Greece received remittances amounting to USD 824 M in 2014, Turkey reported a sum of USD 1.13 B, Macedonia USD 367 M, Albania USD 1.11 B, Croatia USD 1.52 B, and Montenegro USD 441 M.
Serbia attracted the largest amount of remittances in the region, at USD 3.66 B, Romania reported remittances totaling USD 3.43 B, and Bosnia and Herzegovina received a total of USD 1.99 B in 2014.
On a global scale, remittances stood at USD 583 B in 2014.
