Bulgaria does not need to be placed under monitoring because of the refugee situation, EU Home Affairs Commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom told Bulgaria's National Radio, Monday.
Earlier this year the EU Commissioner intended to activate a special early warning mechanism against Bulgaria due to the slow document processing procedures for asylum seekers and the poor living conditions.
Now, however, Malmstrom was adamant that the situation in Bulgaria is under control and does not require the introduction of such a mechanism.
“We saw very, very serious efforts to address the situation in Bulgaria. There was a considerable progress despite the continuous pressure from newly arriving people. So at this point, neither we nor the Bulgarian authorities need to implement this mechanism. Of course, we will continue to work with the Bulgarian authorities and help them with everything possible. There might be a new influx of asylum seekers, but I think that the situation in Bulgaria is under control,” The EU Home Affairs Commissioner said, as quoted by BNR.
The European Asylum Support Office (EASO) released its Annual Report on the Situation of Asylum in the European Union 2013, Monday. According to the document, last year Bulgaria was among the countries most affected by the asylum seekers influx.
