Thousands of Bulgarians gathered in the capital Sofia Wednesday to protests against the country’s embattled Socialist-led government.

The rally has been peaceful as usual – but reporters say police have launched massive ID checks of demonstrators trying to reach the Parliament Square in Sofia.

The intersection in front of the main building of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” was temporarily blocked on Wednesday evening.

News website Dnevnik.bg reported at around 8 pm EET that some of the protesters had started already leaving the rally.

Earlier on Wednesday, students and university teachers gathered in front of the building of the Interior Ministry in Sofia to protest against police violence during the blockade of the Parliament on Tuesday. They demanded sanctions against the police officers who used excessive force during Tuesday’s rally.

Wednesday marks the 153rd day of relentless anti-government rallies in Bulgaria.
The protests were triggered by the appointment of controversial media mogul Delyan Peevski as Chair of the State Agency for National security (DANS) in June – and were fueled by a number of other controversial appointments and wider concerns about corruption.

The rallies were given a fresh boost as students staged full and partial blockades at a number of universities in October.

Tensions escalated on Tuesday, as police cracked down on a massive anti-graft rally in Sofia.
