South Sudan, the world's newest nation, marks one year since it became independent on Monday.

However, the anniversary comes amid concerns about the dire economic situation in the country and tensions with neighboring Sudan.

Border clashes have brought the countries to the brink of war and left South Sudan coping with a massive humanitarian crisis as people flee the fighting, CNN has reminded.

The country stopped oil production amid a dispute over transportation and processing fees with Khartoum, thus losing over 90% of its revenues.

The UN Security Council recently extended a peacekeeping mission in South Sudan for another year.

The launch of the world's youngest state was made possible in 2011 after a two- decade civil war which took the lives of 2 million people.
