The fifth steam turbine, which is the main capacity of the Republika Thermal Power Plant in Pernik, will be stopped in a few days' time.
Environment Minister Nona Karadzhova explained Monday that the facility in the western city would be stopped due to the lack of a desulphurization plant.
She made clear that a new facility and a sulphur dioxide monitoring system would be built within six months.
Plamen Angelov, head of the Regional Inspectorate of Environment and Water in Pernik, noted that the step would not affect locals because the production of hot water in summer could continue with a reserve capacity of the TPP.
The Pernik-based TPP is owned by energy tycoon Hristo Kovachki.
In her Monday statement in Pernik, Karadzhova specified that desulphurization plants were being built at the other thermal power plants owned by Kovachki, for instance the Brikel TPP.
