At least twenty eight people, twenty two of whom children, have perished in a hellish bus crash in Switzerland, according to reports of local police.

BBC informs Wednesday that 24 other children have sustained injuries. They had been flown to hospitals in Lausanne, Berne and other Swiss cities. The accident occurred in the canton of Valais, near the border with Italy.

All of the 52 passengers on the bus were from Belgium, from the villages of Lommel and Heverlee. The two classes of schoolchildren were returning home after a skiing holiday in the Swiss Alps.

The bus crashed into the wall of a tunnel near the town of Sierre Tuesday night. Both drivers were killed.

A helpline for families has been set up, and many parents are expected to arrive in Switzerland shortly.

Police, investigating the crash, described the tragedy as "unprecedented".
