Libyan politicians, close to dictator, Muamar Gaddafi, have been in touch with the US authorities in order to seek an exit from the crisis.

The information was reported Thursday by the Bulgarian news agency BTA, citing Denis McDonough, a Deputy National Security Advisor for US President, Barack Obama.

McDonough told MSNBC television that the air strikes launched Saturday by US, French and British forces were having an impact on Gaddafi's regime.

"It wouldn't surprise me... given intense pressure that he (Gaddafi) and his inner circle are under as a result of the remarkable work of our troops, there are some of them reaching out looking for opportunities to get out in the middle of that," McDonough pointed out.

A senior US official is reported saying that Libya's Foreign Minister, Mussa Kussa, and Abdullah al-Senussi, Gaddafi's brother-in-law and head of military intelligence, have recently called high-ranking diplomats from the US State Department.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has also stated that Gaddafi insiders may be actively seeking exit options while Defense Secretary Robert Gates raised the possibility of defections from Gaddafi's inner circle.
