Bulgarian foreign minister Nikolay Mladenov should resign over his attitude to diplomats who have served in communist State Security, stated organizations of former intelligence officers.
According to them Mladenov has acted incompetently in requesting the diplomats' dismissal, given the fact that diplomatic services and intelligence agencies are intertwined as a matter of principle.
In addition, the Association of Former Intelligence Officers and the Security Association argued that Mladenov's actions have compromised both Bulgaria's image and national security.
The statement further adds that the move might have been motivated in order to distract public attention from the imminent failure of Bulgaria's Schengen bid. Over the week, EU majors France and Germany announced that they will block Bulgaria's much-hoped March 2011 Schengen entry.
The former Bulgarian intelligence officers also argued that the law requiring the unveiling of the identities of State Security personell is deeply flawed in that it does not require distinguishing between officers who have worked for repressive units and those who have carried out regular intelligence activities.
